Cath Update #5: Sitting Up

We have been up in his patient room for a few hours now (not in the cardiac pod, but we'll survive). He wasn't allowed to sit up until five, which meant I couldn't give him anything to drink until then. Once five came, I changed his diaper, sat him up so he could play in his hospital bed, and he quickly downed eight ounces of water. Hopefully it will stay down and his IV will get pulled.

He has been a trooper throughout. He stayed laying down for over five hours without complaint. He didn't even protest when I kept his leg straight (they didn't want him moving the one that had the catheter in it). I am quite impressed. I really thought the first several hours would be a battle to keep him still.

Early on, as he was starting to come out of the anesthesia and pain meds, he came to briefly, saw me, said "hi," started to drift back off, but said "bye" before he did. The next time he started to wake up, he said "please" several times (what he wanted, I don't know) before nodding off. He will randomly take his pacifier out of his mouth just long enough to say a quick "hi" to his nurse while she's standing beside his bed. He also will offer a quiet "bye" when anyone leaves. He has been very funny.

Hopefully, tomorrow morning will come very quickly and we'll be heading home early. Until then, I'm grateful for the fellow cardiac parents who are bringing me dinner (I haven't had anything since the two pop tarts I ate on the way to the hospital this morning - didn't want to eat in front of Ayden when he couldn't have anything) and hoping Ayden (and thus, me) gets a good night's sleep.
